David Loy

After graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara, David Loy decided to volunteer for a year with Americorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America). His volunteer work took him to a small, marginalized community in the San Joaquin Valley where he helped implement a Geographic Information System to help the community with land-use planning, business development and emergency preparedness.  Following his service, he returned to his home in San Diego where he attended California Western School of Law, earning his Juris Doctorate degree.

While at California Western, Mr. Loy took advantage of many of the school’s legal opportunities. Following his first year, he became the recipient of the Anson Levitan law school grant and helped impoverished individuals obtain health-care and disability benefits from public programs such as Medi-Cal, SSI and County Medical Services. In his second year, Mr. Loy was accepted into the school’s highly regarded California Innocence Project, where he worked as a certified student attorney to investigate and research claims of innocence by a number of incarcerated men and women. In his third year, he participated in the school’s Problem Solving and Prevention in Health Care class, where he worked with a small group of classmates in bringing realistic solutions to health problems faced in south-east San Diego. Through it all, Mr. Loy continued to give back to his community by spending a considerable amount of time working as a volunteer at the St. Vincent De Paul homeless shelter, where he provided legal guidance to homeless individuals.

His work with Beach | Whitman | Cowdrey, LLP started after his second year of law school, when he was hired as a law clerk in the firm’s San Diego office.  He is admitted to the U.S. District Court, Southern District of California, is a current member of the Defense Research Institute (DRI), the San Diego County Bar Association, and the American Bar Association’s Sections of Litigation and Health Law. He currently volunteers with Volunteers in Parole (”VIP”) and received the ‘Best New Match’ award for his service.
